Work has been ridiculously busy since the beginning of term. It’s been one trial after another. I spent last week up to my neck in the biggest trial around…one of those cases that comes up once or twice a year and the press and the public go crazy over them.

Well this trial is definately a biggy. Most of the larger media outlets are sending two or three staff along, someone to write news and someone to write colour (the more impressionistic stuff). We’re no different.

This mean’s that every day everyone’s fighting for a seat in a courtroom that was built long before tabloid interest blew these kinds of cases out of all proportion. Don’t get me wrong, if it wasn’t for that unhealthy obsession with death and disaster, I’d be out of a job but there is a fine line between public interest and media circus.

This week thank goodness another trial has started so I’m in that and there’s a lot more elbow room. I’m also home at a reasonable time for the first time in ages so I can actually get something done.

I’ve had a page saved on my desktop for the last god know’s how long with Chapter 8 written at the top and nothing else. I know exactly what’s going to happen but getting time to sit down and write is just proving impossible. Much as I love being married I miss being able to sit down at the laptop and write for hours at a time.

But such is life, I love my husband and my job so I guess I’m just going to have to work round both of them. If the current trial continues as it did today though I’ll be back writing in no time. Then the ultimate perk of the job – two free weeks at Easter.

It’s probably just a result of long, dark winter but writing seems an almost chore at the moment. Even if my characters are chattering away inside my head. Unfortunately if I’m going to earn my living through any kind of writing at all, I’m just going to have to find the time to do the other stuff where ever I can.

To be honest, it’s been easy to dodge Book 2 for the past few weeks, especially when Book 1 is getting turned down left, right and centre. I’m going to have to steel myself soon for yet another round of submissions. It’ll take as long as it takes but I have to stay focused on Book 2.

In the meantime it’s back to the grindstone tomorrow with the details of another sad and pointless death. In Cold Blood it ain’t but it pays the bills!
